Dr. Michael Paley received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his Medicine Residency and Rheumatology Fellowship and Barnes Jewish Hospital / Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Paley has a specific clinic interest in ocular manifestations of systemic rheumatologic diseases. He is the Director of the Ocular Rheumatology Clinic at Washington University in St. Louis, which collaborates with the Department of Ophthalmology to care for patients with uveitis, scleritis, and orbital inflammation. He is a Scholar in the Bursky Center for Human Immunology and Immunotherapy and has received the Jane Bruckel Early Career Investigator Award in Axial Spondyloarthritis and the American Society for Clinical Investigation’s Young Physician-Scientist Award. His research interest is on HLA-B*27 and how it causes both acute anterior uveitis and axial spondyloarthritis. His lab is founded on the principle that identifying the disease-causing cells in acute anterior uveitis and axial spondyloarthritis will lead to new diagnostics and therapeutics. Ultimately, his dream would be to catch the disease in its infancy in high-risk individuals, eliminate the disease-causing cells, and effectively prevent the disease from getting started.
